What?
Food Hack Lab is a non-profit organisation based in the Basque Country dedicated to researching, developing and sharing technology related to food. Working at the intersection of FoodTech, free and open-source culture, maker practices and collaborative experimentation, it explores how technology can generate new ways of producing, transforming, understanding and sharing food.
Food Hack Lab was founded in 2015 within Hirikilabs, Tabakalera’s Urban Digital Culture Laboratory in San Sebastián, a space devoted to the social, critical, active and collaborative use of technology. It emerged in particular from the Hirikilabs Plaza sessions, which encouraged an open use of the laboratory and enabled projects to take shape collectively as open groups. In 2016, it became an independent registered non-profit association, while maintaining both its base and its original spirit.
Technology is understood here in a broad sense: not only as devices or machines, but also as know-how, techniques, practical knowledge, cultural practices and shared ways of doing. Food Hack Lab therefore works not only with tools, but with methods, processes and forms of collective learning.
This perspective also informs LURLAB, one of its core initiatives: a network of rural and peri-urban FABLABs, and an open ecosystem of spaces, tools and methodologies rooted in community life. Through LURLAB, Food Hack Lab connects technology, maker culture and territorial development, exploring how local capacities, distributed knowledge and hands-on experimentation can strengthen rural communities and widen access to innovation.
Across all its work, Food Hack Lab follows a practical and open logic: learning by doing, documenting processes, sharing knowledge, and enabling others to replicate, adapt and expand what has been developed.
